Overview

What is Surgical Oncology?

In most cases, surgery is necessary for the treatment of tumors. It is typically the first stage of treatment, although radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy may be given before, during, or after surgery. Surgical oncology involves removing the tumor as accurately as possible. In some cases, it is combined with a lymph-node dissection, where the surgeon removes as many lymph nodes that drain the tumor and are likely to be affected. For breast cancer, the sentinel lymph node approach allows the removal of just one lymph node, helping to preserve healthy tissue. If the lymph node chain is damaged, the surgeon removes it, but if it is healthy, the remaining nodes are retained. These operations are typically performed under anesthesia. The evaluation of lymph nodes also assists in determining the postoperative course of treatment, which may include chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
